Movie Night

My sister belongs to Netflix.  She watches a movie nearly every night, a habit she developed about the time her nest emptied out.  There are certain movies (To Kill a Mockingbird comes to mind) that she watches again and again over the years.

Unlike my sister, I am not a big time TV movie fan.  It's like a two hour commitment and other things are always there to call to me.  (Like what?
Well, nothing really.)  Last night, I decided to check out the offerings on Free Movies On Demand.  I can tell you right off the bat that there is little danger of my developing an every night movie habit based on the offerings there.  However,  American Graffiti did catch my eye.

Good grief!  Has it been THAT long since 1973??!??  Ron Howard, Richard Dreyfus, Harrison Ford--all young enough to at least get away with playing teenagers.  And whatever happened to Wolf Man Jack, I wonder?

I remember it like it was yesterday--1973.

Do you have a favorite movie?

  1. I channel surf or surf on-demand and find something I would like to see about 20% of the time...if nothing strikes my fancy I plenty of other hobbies, work and reading to keep me busy.

  2. Those on-demand freebies don't offer much of a selection, I agree. I'd rather DVR something, then play it back later. I do love movies, but I'm not sure which one is my favorite. Since visiting my mother at the nursing home, I've been introduced to many oldies, and I may try to see some more of them.

  3. Whenever I'm asked my favorite movie, I say there are two. One is Tess with Nastassja Kinski and the other is Days of Heaven. The second one is memorable to me not for the story, but for the cinematography and for Linda Manz' narrating voice.

  4. I like a good movie now and again and I like them at home not the theater. I don't need a steady diet of them, just once in while. I always have problems picking favorites. I like all the Jesse Stone (made for TV) movies with Tom Sellek...I love the moodiness, the haunting music, Stone's weakness for love which drives him to alcohol, the predictable elements ("What are you looking at?"), and the rain soaked beauty of the scenery. They are studies in the melancholy nature of human weakness offset by Stone's principles.

  5. I rarely watch movies anymore. But my all-time fave is The Sound of Music (Julie Andrews). I have watched it more than 10 times.

  6. I'm like you; I hate to commit 2 hrs. to a movie b/c I'm doing what? Nothing really. Favorite movies? For a long time it was The Graduate. Then it was Caddyshack. Then The Commitments. Then Schindler's List. Lately my favorites are . . . movies of my kids when they were young.

  7. It occurred to me that I could have played a teenager in 1973. It really was a long time ago. One of my favorite movies is Don Juan De Marco. It gets on television once in a while and if I know about it, I will watch it--even jwith commercials.

  8. I'm not a big movie fan, thought with the PVR I can pause it and go do what I need to and come back to it. I'm more likely to be watching sports or a Law and Order rerun.

Probably the movie I've enjoyed most recently would be "The Help". Although had I read the book before seeing the movie it probably wouldn't have been as good.

  9. I don't! I do like murder mysteries, and we buy these as a set.
Cheers from Cottage Country Ontario , ON, Canada!

  10. I'm like you. I don't ever see anything on t.v. movies that catches my eye. We looked tonight for a movie because I was lukewarm about watching one. Thankfully, nothing looked good. I don't like to make a two hour commitment either. We saw a couple of movies over the holidays. We saw Hunger Games II and Saving Mr. Banks. Really enjoyed both of them. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed Hunger Games. I only went because the grandkids wanted to see it. I was glad I went.

  11. I think my all-time favorites (ones I've watched more than once) are The American President, Field of Dreams and As Good As It Gets.

  12. I have Netflix and I loved watching Foyle's War. Now we're watching Poirot. I like short things to watch so I don't take up the whole night watching a movie. Favorite movie.... hmmmm... I remember loving My Fair Lady when it came out, but I don't have a yen to watch it now. I know... I loved Departures which was a Japanese film. My husband votes for Star Wars.

  14. I am a movie watcher and TV viewer. It was my pleasure to be able to watch season 4 of Downton Abbey on my blog friend Simply June when it came out in the UK. Tonight it begins in the US. I enjoy many of the British programs and like Kay, loved Foyles War. Right now I am watching Scandal but have to catch up about three seasons on Netflix before the next season starts on Television again.It is a drama but pretty funny to me because the female lead always states that she is NEVER wrong and so far has been wrong in every episode. I love Mad Men because I worked as a secretary in that era of female discrimination. I love The Blacklist with James Spader. My favorite movie is Fisher King with Robin Williams and Jeff Bridges. Well, you see I can go on and on. I lived American Graffiti with my high school friends going off to Vietnam. And my children can quote every single line and sing every song from Grease:}

  16. I did love that movie. Hum, might check it out again. I have Netflix but I only watch one movie a week. There aren't enough good ones out to do more than that, at least in my opinion.

  17. I'm afraid I'm more like your sister. I have a real weakness for Netflix. I've never had cable because I knew I couldn't be trusted with it. I'd find a way to watch TV all day, and now I have to be really disciplined, and help me if I latch on to some show I find addictive.

Updates

On September 29, I had the closing on my condo. Everything that was not going to the buyers was out and packed in the ABF moving truck which had by the been taken over to the storage units. Don thought it would take him until Wednesday to finish packing the truck with the help of his son. It took him until late Thursday with Chris' help and mine. Kevin was supposed to help load as well but he was in a mountain bike accident and wrecked his shoulder the week before. That added driving him to doctor appointments to my to do list and dong some shopping for him plus jobs around the house that might need two functioning upper limbs.  We stayed with Kevin on Friday night after the closing and then had a suite in an extended stay place for the coming week. This was the worst possible time to have to get a room because the prices balloon during leaf peeping season if you can even find a room at all. But it was close to the storage units where we were working and it was dog friendly. We ju

Wedding

Don and I drove to South Carolina to attend the wedding of my step-grandson, Will. Will Will and Katie The wedding took place on Dataw Island, a beautiful outdoor ceremony followed by a reception in the country club. We stayed in a tiny cottage in the historic center of Beaufort, rented from Vrbo. Since the wedding was at 5 p.m., we had time to explore the area a bit. I really like the low country scenery and historical charm. Sitting quietly in the curtained gazebo I was visited by multiple cardinals. They came to visit the feeder, not me, but I can always pretend! How I will always remember Will!

Rest In Peace

In a summer that has been so wet, Sunday was a reprieve. The humidity dropped and the sun came out. It was a day that could have been special ordered by the family of a friend's husband. It was the day they had arranged his celebration of life ceremony set on the shore of Lake Champlain. I was not looking forward to the gathering, even couched as a celebration. This is a family fraught with relationship tensions. It turned out to be a beautiful day and a beautiful ceremony. A Catholic priest gave a brief but meaningful homily and two Air Force members played "Taps" and presented the American flag to my friend. I am not a Christian, but I do know about Christ Consciousness. That priest's word's filled me with such a sense of peace and love. I hope it did the same for the family members and neighbors who attended.
