Busy

I have signed up at the local YMCA, only about a mile from my house here, and I have started taking the beginner yoga classes.  I am really enjoying it very much--four classes under my belt so far.  Flexibility has never been my strength, but I can already feel a small difference and I am definitely more aware of my posture.

They say that yoga is good for blood pressure and insomnia.  I really would be happy to find that to be true.

My other "keep busy" tactic is to find a volunteer opportunity while I am in Florida.  I thought about the library since that is what I do at home, but then I found this place.  I went to a volunteer orientation today.  It is not far away although it is a little tricky to get there (Thank God for GPS!).  It is a very cool place.  I don't know what I will be asked to do.  I know it is a little mean spirited, but I do kind of hope that they give the shovel-horse-manure jobs to those who are court ordered to do community service rather than to us do-gooder retirees.

I am hearing some rumbles of thunder.  We have had a lot of rain for this being the "dry season."  However, we have not had the kind of flooding rains that have occurred in eastern parts of the state.  It was beautiful here all day and I got in  both a walk and a short bike ride.  My bone density test in December was mildly bothersome so I am recommitting to exercise.

  1. Good luck. I'm excited about the equine therapy. Place. I know a little about the amazing therapeutic benefits of horses. Can't wait to learn more.

  2. Shoveling is good exercise, however, I don't think you are mean spirited to defer it to those who need a little lesson in humility and right and wrong. Good to hear you are keeping busy.

  3. It has been hard for me to find some volunteering where I feel I am making a difference. I prefer being with people, rather than working alone in an office. Good luck with your venture.

  4. Volunteering is very rewarding, but you have to find something you like doing. The library is perfect for me. Careful with the yoga - I hurt myself quite a lot in the beginning and had to give it up in favor of 'stretch class' at the gym, which suits me much better (at my age.)

  5. I too am in search of volunteer projects. My health is my first priority and we do have a nice, inexpensive gym nearby that I might join. If I am going to keep our place in the country I am going to have to become more physically fit. Also to keep mentally fit I need to be busy doing for others in some way.

  6. Well, good for you! I am so glad you are doing yoga, exercising, and volunteering. I could take a cue from you. Lol. I start a new 6 week session of hula on Jan 22 and can't wait.

  8. Hi Olga, I took Yoga for many years and always liked the beginner classes the best. I never "graduated" to advanced! Now I do the poses at home, and they make a big difference in my strength and flexibility. I didn't know you like horses - hope you don't get poop duty! (Somehow, it makes me smile to think of you scooping manure!)

  9. I love how you take action in your life and get out and do things. It's fabulous that you are taking steps to be as healthy as possible. I have to work on my posture too. Sigh.

  10. I think the Yoga classes will be wonderful for you. If it's a good Instructor he/she will not expect you to do more than you should. Yoga is great for flexibility, but yes you can hurt yourself if you are not careful. Just don't overdo. And your volunteering at the Horse Therapy place sounds like it could be a great experience! Keep us informed.

  11. I've been a long-time proponent of the benefits of yoga. When I worked, I often closed my office door and practiced some yoga. It always lowered my stress levels. You're a true inspiration with your desire to volunteer.

  12. Enjoy the yoga and the volunteering! I like the idea of yoga, but am horribly afraid of horses. I suppose I could shovel out the stalls as long as the horse wasn't there.

    Have a wonderful week!

  13. I took yoga for seven years, almost always in the gentlest class. My challenge is always to empty my mind, and yoga is about the only thing that does that. I listen to the instructor and try the poses, and it takes all my attention.

  14. Ugh, you put me to shame! I'm such a slug this winter. In Stride looks wonderful. I would not want to leave. I so look forward to hearing more about your time there.

  15. I sometimes think I should do some volunteer work, but then i don't know when I would fit it in!
My latest objective is to be ready for back surgery recovery in three weeks. So I am working on squatting and bending knees instead of bending over, keeping my back straight instead of twisting, and working on posture. I'm finding some unused muscles.
I will be interested in hearing about your volunteer duties!

  16. Being around those beautiful horses should be good for the blood pressure, too! I've often considered doing yoga but just never get to it. I am curious to see if you continue to feel the benefits of it.

Updates

On September 29, I had the closing on my condo. Everything that was not going to the buyers was out and packed in the ABF moving truck which had by the been taken over to the storage units. Don thought it would take him until Wednesday to finish packing the truck with the help of his son. It took him until late Thursday with Chris' help and mine. Kevin was supposed to help load as well but he was in a mountain bike accident and wrecked his shoulder the week before. That added driving him to doctor appointments to my to do list and dong some shopping for him plus jobs around the house that might need two functioning upper limbs.  We stayed with Kevin on Friday night after the closing and then had a suite in an extended stay place for the coming week. This was the worst possible time to have to get a room because the prices balloon during leaf peeping season if you can even find a room at all. But it was close to the storage units where we were working and it was dog friendly. We ju

Wedding

Don and I drove to South Carolina to attend the wedding of my step-grandson, Will. Will Will and Katie The wedding took place on Dataw Island, a beautiful outdoor ceremony followed by a reception in the country club. We stayed in a tiny cottage in the historic center of Beaufort, rented from Vrbo. Since the wedding was at 5 p.m., we had time to explore the area a bit. I really like the low country scenery and historical charm. Sitting quietly in the curtained gazebo I was visited by multiple cardinals. They came to visit the feeder, not me, but I can always pretend! How I will always remember Will!

Rest In Peace

In a summer that has been so wet, Sunday was a reprieve. The humidity dropped and the sun came out. It was a day that could have been special ordered by the family of a friend's husband. It was the day they had arranged his celebration of life ceremony set on the shore of Lake Champlain. I was not looking forward to the gathering, even couched as a celebration. This is a family fraught with relationship tensions. It turned out to be a beautiful day and a beautiful ceremony. A Catholic priest gave a brief but meaningful homily and two Air Force members played "Taps" and presented the American flag to my friend. I am not a Christian, but I do know about Christ Consciousness. That priest's word's filled me with such a sense of peace and love. I hope it did the same for the family members and neighbors who attended.
