Just in TIme

I had an appointment to get snow tires put on the Prius first thing this morning.
That was pretty timely since we had some snow last night.  The roads were clear, but my driveway is a sheet of ice.  It is good that it is a flat driveway so I did not have trouble getting out.  I did slip and slide later, walking out to the mail box, but I did not fall down.

One winter day when I was in high school, the school parking lot and side walks were terribly icy.  I had gotten by car and was walking toward the school's front door with an armload of books (Backpacks were for military hikes back then, I guess.  I only remember carrying books in my arms right through college.)   I made it from the parking lot, across the driveway, and I was just stepping up onto the walkway.  As I stepped, I slid.  Somehow in the disjointed dance I performed in trying to maintain my balance, I did a rather inelegant flip and landed on my rump with books raining down upon me.  My immediate reaction was relief.  A bus had just unloaded and all the students had gotten inside.  Maybe nobody saw my accident.  I heard a whoop, though, and looked up at the library window from where a classmate had been observing the whole show.  I am glad he was not taking pictures for the yearbook that day.

So not falling on the ice today was a good thing.

  1. Oh, you have a Pruis! My dream car. Someday I hope to have one. Do you like yours? Re: falling with books raining down on you~~~aren't we glad instagram and Facebook was not around when we were teens?

    1. I just got the Prius (used) this past summer and I do really like it--much more than my dream car which was a Saab. That dream was called a nightmare.

  2. Oh, I am so glad that I'm not the only one who has those humiliating memories!
On the way home from work tonight I was reviewing different times in my life and thinking how glad I am that I'm no longer a kid. :-P

    1. These memories for me could fill a book, but it would be too painful to write.

  3. If it could just go from dry to snow, and leave out the icy part! I am not a fan of ice either when I'm walking or driving.

I had the snow tires put on this weekend as well. Our snow is pretty much gone but I'm sure there will be more soon.

    Be careful out there!

    1. I have not had snow tires for several years since we have been going to Florida, but I did not want to get caught without them in a car as small and light as the Prius. I put on studded snow tires and was darn glad for them yesterday because I had to travel over the mountain and it was snowy. freezey.

  4. We don't get a lot of snow here, but we do get ice! So dangerous! I'm glad your spill was in your memory and not on your rear end.

  5. Hope you are not too sore tomorrow! Sorry to hear about your fall!

  6. Glad nothing was broken. Ice falls are so dangerous and get more dangerous as we age.

  7. I love Aunt Betsy saying it's a good thing Facebook wasn't around when we were young. lol. I would have been a star for embarrassing accidents and other bloopers.

Seriously fear of falling is a big deal for me these days. I try to keep my cell phone on me all the times but am considering subscribing to LifeAlert. I had an aunt who fell on ice outside her home and died in the snow for her son to find the next morning.

    1. That is horrible. Another thing to add to my "what if?" file. It has grown exponentially in the past three months.

  8. I envy folks with snow. We get rain, and sometimes ice, but not much else.

    Love my Prius too.

  9. Oh for the good ole camera phone free days. We could be embarrassed with little fanfare. Today that would have gone viral.

    1. Like I said, I could write a book, but, yes, I am glad that the movie version isn't already out there.

  10. Do be careful on ice. Remember those flexible bones from our high school years are more easily broken now that we're of a certain age! (Funny story, though!)

  11. I am glad you did not break any bones. Yes, I remember carrying a load of books plus my violin to and from school all the way thru college. Lol.

  12. I'm glad you didn't break anything in your fall... bones, I mean. I remember one crazy January in Illinois when I was walking to the car carrying a casserole to bring to a friend's house. I slipped on the ice and fell on my rump. I never let go of the casserole which amazes me to this day. The casserole was a bit rumpled, but OK. I was so padded with all my winter clothes that I was OK too. I would sure hate to fall on ice now.

  13. Take it from me, another former Saab owner: Sounds like it's time for you to be leaving for Florida!

  14. So glad you didn't take a fall like that this time! We are all in agreement that someone would have captured the whole thing on their phone! Fun memory!

  15. Keep your balance, Olga! I was walking on ice today, too, and thought it was not a great time to break anything. I'm assuming you're ready for FL?

Updates

On September 29, I had the closing on my condo. Everything that was not going to the buyers was out and packed in the ABF moving truck which had by the been taken over to the storage units. Don thought it would take him until Wednesday to finish packing the truck with the help of his son. It took him until late Thursday with Chris' help and mine. Kevin was supposed to help load as well but he was in a mountain bike accident and wrecked his shoulder the week before. That added driving him to doctor appointments to my to do list and dong some shopping for him plus jobs around the house that might need two functioning upper limbs.  We stayed with Kevin on Friday night after the closing and then had a suite in an extended stay place for the coming week. This was the worst possible time to have to get a room because the prices balloon during leaf peeping season if you can even find a room at all. But it was close to the storage units where we were working and it was dog friendly. We ju

Wedding

Don and I drove to South Carolina to attend the wedding of my step-grandson, Will. Will Will and Katie The wedding took place on Dataw Island, a beautiful outdoor ceremony followed by a reception in the country club. We stayed in a tiny cottage in the historic center of Beaufort, rented from Vrbo. Since the wedding was at 5 p.m., we had time to explore the area a bit. I really like the low country scenery and historical charm. Sitting quietly in the curtained gazebo I was visited by multiple cardinals. They came to visit the feeder, not me, but I can always pretend! How I will always remember Will!

Rest In Peace

In a summer that has been so wet, Sunday was a reprieve. The humidity dropped and the sun came out. It was a day that could have been special ordered by the family of a friend's husband. It was the day they had arranged his celebration of life ceremony set on the shore of Lake Champlain. I was not looking forward to the gathering, even couched as a celebration. This is a family fraught with relationship tensions. It turned out to be a beautiful day and a beautiful ceremony. A Catholic priest gave a brief but meaningful homily and two Air Force members played "Taps" and presented the American flag to my friend. I am not a Christian, but I do know about Christ Consciousness. That priest's word's filled me with such a sense of peace and love. I hope it did the same for the family members and neighbors who attended.
