Progress

Mike is making progress.  He is no longer in the ICU.  He has been eating regular food for a couple of days.  Tubes for oxygen, kidney draining, bladder draining, and stomach pumping are all gone.

He still has an IV drip for some of his medications.  There is still some lingering infection and his heart rate never drops below 100.  He is weak, but he is doing physical therapy each day.

He looks like himself again...and he is getting a teeny bit cranky about having to be in the hospital so now I can believe he is going to be okay.

I have had a lot of support--my family, my friends, our neighbors, my blogging community, my library cohorts, and all my various writing pals have rallied around.

My dear friend Ginnie loaded me up with delicious comfort food.  My son took me out for a sandwich supper and a walk around funky downtown Burlington. Another friend is having me over tomorrow for a lunch and a tour of her garden.  The librarian brought me a copy of Anne Lamott's Help Thanks Wow: The Three Essential Prayers.  I liked it so much I went out and bought my very own copy.

And the prayers and positive, healing thoughts--I gratefully accept these on Mike's behalf.  I am most fortunate to know two women who are conduits for the healing energy of the universe.  Mike believes in the medical treatments.  I do not discount them, but I wanted and needed more.

I came home today early and did some sewing and a bit of reading.  I almost feel normal again for whole minutes at a time!  The fear has been driven back for now.

Amen.

  1. Sounds like my dad, as soon as he got tired and cranky about being in the hospital we were certain he was on the mend. Must be a guy thing!

Glad to hear you got some healing of your own. Take care!

  2. Olga, so happy to hear that Mike is on the mend. It may still be a long haul, but with the support of your family and friends, you will both get through this. And yes, I'm sure that the better he feels, the sooner he will want out of the hospital and back home with you.

  9. Good post. Eating and griping are good signs for those fighting illness. I do look forward to the post when you bring him home and then the post when he is getting around on his own! Listen to some soul restoring music now and again.

  14. Olga I sense a great relief in your words and must say I too get your need to believe there's more to healing than just what science hands us! Positive vibes seem to be around for us to tap into.
Glad you were able to not worry at least for a bit longer than before. The next stretch with hubby home will still be trying as crabby can annoy so stay your strong self!
Here at our place we are getting back to a better pace as hubby gets lees weak. The toughest part is convincing him to be more physically active. He sleepd and then wants to head to his office to catch up. I give him space of a couple of hours dailt but he has to walk with me at least once and if possible twice. That's the key to his recvery.
I am rooting for you to get back to a good place too:)

  16. Saturday update:Mike is feeling stronger. His heart rate has slowed down--finally!...with new medication. They are really not sure about the swelling in his feet and now his left knee. They are treating it as gout, but the tests are far from definitive. They have ruled out new infection, which is good news. He got up with just my help today. (I was wondering if I could handle that, so it was a good test for both of us.) He has ordered a turkey burger, yogurt, and nutrition drinks (like my yogurt smoothies), which freaks me out a tad! I wonder if he will keep that up!? One of the ICU nurses talked with him for a long time about nutrition and the importance of food to health and it seemed like he was hearing her. His physical therapist is just wonderful. One of his doctors is deaf and has a severe muscular condition that affects his speech even more...and yet they seem to communicate quite well. It is impressive to observe. His kidney function has improved. His sense of humor is definitely intact although sometimes I have to explain it to staff. And he so wants to get better. I think that is extremely important.

  17. Well, this is all good news. It is so hard to be sick and it is hard to be the person who loves the sick person. I know from the times I have been with my girl in the hospital that it is exhausting for everyone. And while I do like me my western medicine, I am totally glad you have friends who can access something a little different.

Updates

On September 29, I had the closing on my condo. Everything that was not going to the buyers was out and packed in the ABF moving truck which had by the been taken over to the storage units. Don thought it would take him until Wednesday to finish packing the truck with the help of his son. It took him until late Thursday with Chris' help and mine. Kevin was supposed to help load as well but he was in a mountain bike accident and wrecked his shoulder the week before. That added driving him to doctor appointments to my to do list and dong some shopping for him plus jobs around the house that might need two functioning upper limbs.  We stayed with Kevin on Friday night after the closing and then had a suite in an extended stay place for the coming week. This was the worst possible time to have to get a room because the prices balloon during leaf peeping season if you can even find a room at all. But it was close to the storage units where we were working and it was dog friendly. We ju

Wedding

Don and I drove to South Carolina to attend the wedding of my step-grandson, Will. Will Will and Katie The wedding took place on Dataw Island, a beautiful outdoor ceremony followed by a reception in the country club. We stayed in a tiny cottage in the historic center of Beaufort, rented from Vrbo. Since the wedding was at 5 p.m., we had time to explore the area a bit. I really like the low country scenery and historical charm. Sitting quietly in the curtained gazebo I was visited by multiple cardinals. They came to visit the feeder, not me, but I can always pretend! How I will always remember Will!

Rest In Peace

In a summer that has been so wet, Sunday was a reprieve. The humidity dropped and the sun came out. It was a day that could have been special ordered by the family of a friend's husband. It was the day they had arranged his celebration of life ceremony set on the shore of Lake Champlain. I was not looking forward to the gathering, even couched as a celebration. This is a family fraught with relationship tensions. It turned out to be a beautiful day and a beautiful ceremony. A Catholic priest gave a brief but meaningful homily and two Air Force members played "Taps" and presented the American flag to my friend. I am not a Christian, but I do know about Christ Consciousness. That priest's word's filled me with such a sense of peace and love. I hope it did the same for the family members and neighbors who attended.
