:Home Again

Mike was discharged from the hospital yesterday and was very glad to get home.  He is getting a long, good night's sleep.  He was impressed with the care taken, but no matter how pleasant they try to make it, a hospital stay is still a stay in the hospital.  Sleep is always interrupted for some necessary monitoring, not to mention the needs of other patients.

He is walking about and sat outside on the deck last night for a time.  I think his feet still hold him back more than the heart surgery.

The heat has broken, but it is not the bright sunny day we were promised...at least not yet.

I met my son for supper on Monday night and had a very pleasant time and a really good salad supper.  We treated ourselves to creme brûlée for dessert and it was delicious.

On Sunday, Mike called me in the morning and told me not to visit that day.  He was still in the ICU--only because they did not have a regular bed available until that evening--and Saturday night had been chaos.  The man in the next bed had come in with a bullet wound to the head.  I did not need arm-twisting to keep me away so I went to my daughter's.

I took my grand son on a hike.  My grand daughter had been hiking all week during day camp and was quite done with it.  He is six so we only went about a mile and a half, but it was a very steep incline.  My daughter was grateful for the subsequent early bedtime as he was tired out afterwards.

I also managed to keep my library obligations and spent some time on Monday morning making tile coasters and then denim containers with the kids in the summer reading program. I think that they were two successful activities.  Sparking a bit of creativity is a kick.  It is amazing to see just how intuitively creative kids can be--some more so than others, obviously, but I think it was fun for all.

So now I will stick around the house for a few days to keep an eye on how Mike is managing.  I hope it stops raining so he can sit outside and I can get to some weeding.  It has been over a week and although I thought I was quite thorough that last time, some of the weeds are scary looking.  They can hide and then pop out after you turn your back.  And this summer, they have been well watered.  They don't seem to mind all the rain at all.  Pesky.

  1. Oh my goodness, I was just catching up on blogs, while my little charges (2 granddaughters) are sleeping in this morning, and am shocked to hear about Mike's surgery. Glad he is on the mend and back home. Hugs and good thoughts out to both of you. (The care giver needs lots of hugs) Take care of yourself during his recovery!!

  6. this is the time of year that weeds are perfectly healthy. They come creeping and reaching and can be very overpowering. Glad hubby is home. Some gentle outside walking will do the trick.

  11. Major surgery, time in the ICU and he's home already! That's incredible and good to hear.

I hope the rain lets up for you. After last weeks hail storm I'm thinking I might let the weeds grow in the front flower bed. At least there will be something green. :(

    Take care!

  13. It's good to hear that Mike is home and recovery is going well. We are nearing the end of July with no measurable rain yet for the month, and none in the forecast. It looks like our summer drought is on big time. The water bill will be a whopper.

Updates

On September 29, I had the closing on my condo. Everything that was not going to the buyers was out and packed in the ABF moving truck which had by the been taken over to the storage units. Don thought it would take him until Wednesday to finish packing the truck with the help of his son. It took him until late Thursday with Chris' help and mine. Kevin was supposed to help load as well but he was in a mountain bike accident and wrecked his shoulder the week before. That added driving him to doctor appointments to my to do list and dong some shopping for him plus jobs around the house that might need two functioning upper limbs.  We stayed with Kevin on Friday night after the closing and then had a suite in an extended stay place for the coming week. This was the worst possible time to have to get a room because the prices balloon during leaf peeping season if you can even find a room at all. But it was close to the storage units where we were working and it was dog friendly. We ju

Wedding

Don and I drove to South Carolina to attend the wedding of my step-grandson, Will. Will Will and Katie The wedding took place on Dataw Island, a beautiful outdoor ceremony followed by a reception in the country club. We stayed in a tiny cottage in the historic center of Beaufort, rented from Vrbo. Since the wedding was at 5 p.m., we had time to explore the area a bit. I really like the low country scenery and historical charm. Sitting quietly in the curtained gazebo I was visited by multiple cardinals. They came to visit the feeder, not me, but I can always pretend! How I will always remember Will!

Rest In Peace

In a summer that has been so wet, Sunday was a reprieve. The humidity dropped and the sun came out. It was a day that could have been special ordered by the family of a friend's husband. It was the day they had arranged his celebration of life ceremony set on the shore of Lake Champlain. I was not looking forward to the gathering, even couched as a celebration. This is a family fraught with relationship tensions. It turned out to be a beautiful day and a beautiful ceremony. A Catholic priest gave a brief but meaningful homily and two Air Force members played "Taps" and presented the American flag to my friend. I am not a Christian, but I do know about Christ Consciousness. That priest's word's filled me with such a sense of peace and love. I hope it did the same for the family members and neighbors who attended.
