Antioxidants and The Color Purple

You are on the internet, so you know about antioxidants and the "super foods" that contain them.

It is known that antioxidants shield cells from damage by free radicals via some complicated chemical action.    We are led to believe that antioxidants' cell level action by extension protect us against cancer, heart disease, and Alzheimer's disease. It is a buzz word on food packages (being currently over taken by "gluten free")

Or maybe that is a lot of hype.

I am distressed to have food label buzzwords brought into doubt.  Oh, well,  antioxidants are slowly but surely being replaced by gluten free.

Anyway, the antioxidant foods are generally high in fiber and low in bad fat and cholesterol.  That can't be a bad thing.  And if you eat them, you are getting some good vitamins.

And I don't care so much about scientific studies.  When I drink this smoothie, I can actually feel the antioxidants forming an army to protect me at that cellular level.

I know that I gag at the very sight of those green drinks, but I have no problem whatsoever with this purple one:
Yummy!

I make it in my blender with yogurt, a handful of frozen blueberries, a teaspoon of chia seeds and another of flax seeds, and about a half cup of acai juice.  I always think I should have thrown in a bit of honey, but I always forget, and maybe a little sweetness would make me feel less virtuously healthy.

  1. Sounds good! I actually don't mind drinking the green ones, as long as there's fruit in it. The plain veggie ones are a bit strong. And -- I agree about the buzzwords.

  3. In California its all about kale. Try some inyour smoothie. It will make it a horrible color but you won't taste it.

    1. Green drink, kale. Not convinced. I would have to be blindfolded or forced under threat of bodily harm.
Kale is very popular in VT as well. I would eat it in a salad.

    Enjoy!

  6. Love smoothies and they do make me feel a bit righteous in my choice. I never add honey, the fruit is sweet enough.
Sometimes I think these studies are paid for by the people who grow purple things but like you said, fiber and no fat are enough of a sell.

    1. Smoothies are on my list whenever I don't want to think about food but am still hungry--quick, easy, and satisfying. Mike will not touch them. He just eats the fruit in its natural state.

    1. I like the strawberry-orange-banana combination, too. VT strawberries were a bust this year though--too much rain. They rotted in the field.

    1. I have a friend with celiac disease and it is not something I would wish on anyone. Why it is "trendy" is beyond me.

  9. Your drink sounds yummy compared to the green varieties. I am not convinced that it looks any better though. I don't get visions of liver consomme with the green drinks. Probably best to just close one's eyes and enjoy.

    1. Liver consomme--THanks!! It will take a good long tome for me to get that image out of my head.

  10. I drink my breakfast, which is skim milk, Slimfast powder, tofu, blueberries and banana blended into a smoothie. I have that because I like it, it keeps me going all morning, and it keeps me from eating other stuff. The fact that it's also healthy is a bonus.
I do not shop at health food stores, and don't follow food fads. If something i already eat is pronounced a miracle food, that makes me happy. but i know by next month something else will take it's place or some other study will prove it false. We just eat a very well balanced diet.

  11. There's nothing more misleading than the hype about eggs. My brother-in-law has worked with farmers all his life. 'Organic' - probably containing more germs than factory eggs. 'Free range' - the hens are allowed out of their confinement for 20 minutes a day.

Updates

On September 29, I had the closing on my condo. Everything that was not going to the buyers was out and packed in the ABF moving truck which had by the been taken over to the storage units. Don thought it would take him until Wednesday to finish packing the truck with the help of his son. It took him until late Thursday with Chris' help and mine. Kevin was supposed to help load as well but he was in a mountain bike accident and wrecked his shoulder the week before. That added driving him to doctor appointments to my to do list and dong some shopping for him plus jobs around the house that might need two functioning upper limbs.  We stayed with Kevin on Friday night after the closing and then had a suite in an extended stay place for the coming week. This was the worst possible time to have to get a room because the prices balloon during leaf peeping season if you can even find a room at all. But it was close to the storage units where we were working and it was dog friendly. We ju

Wedding

Don and I drove to South Carolina to attend the wedding of my step-grandson, Will. Will Will and Katie The wedding took place on Dataw Island, a beautiful outdoor ceremony followed by a reception in the country club. We stayed in a tiny cottage in the historic center of Beaufort, rented from Vrbo. Since the wedding was at 5 p.m., we had time to explore the area a bit. I really like the low country scenery and historical charm. Sitting quietly in the curtained gazebo I was visited by multiple cardinals. They came to visit the feeder, not me, but I can always pretend! How I will always remember Will!

Rest In Peace

In a summer that has been so wet, Sunday was a reprieve. The humidity dropped and the sun came out. It was a day that could have been special ordered by the family of a friend's husband. It was the day they had arranged his celebration of life ceremony set on the shore of Lake Champlain. I was not looking forward to the gathering, even couched as a celebration. This is a family fraught with relationship tensions. It turned out to be a beautiful day and a beautiful ceremony. A Catholic priest gave a brief but meaningful homily and two Air Force members played "Taps" and presented the American flag to my friend. I am not a Christian, but I do know about Christ Consciousness. That priest's word's filled me with such a sense of peace and love. I hope it did the same for the family members and neighbors who attended.
