Bunny

I have lived in this house for twenty years now.   In all that time, I never once saw a rabbit in the yard.  Well now there is one who has been hanging out under the deck.  I can't imagine why.  My herb garden is there, but there are no rabbit teeth marks on anything--or at least not yet.  I shall keep my eye on that situation.

This is not my picture, but it is cute.  Is this the Chinese calendar year of the rabbit?  Maybe out little visitor will bring me some good luck.

Hmm...those herbs...
I should actually harvest some thyme, Greek oregano, and mint for drying.  I have more chives than I could possibly use.  I am not going to start putting them in my breakfast cereal.  I refuse!

The Herb Gardener is a great place to look for all things herby, by the way.  I will wander over there now as a matter of fact.

  1. Rabbits are back in our suburban neighborhood after many years of absence. I see them all the time now, but they don't touch our garden. At least not so far.

    1. Now that I think about it, we have seen no signs of the predators we used to see in the field. But also the town has stopped mowing the field so they may still be there and the rabbits just have more coverage.

  2. Good luck with your herb garden. I usually buy dry herbs from the supermarket, not grown in my yard.

    1. I like having fresh even when I am not cooking with them. I really like the smell of a bouquet of herbs in the kitchen.

  3. Chocolate chive cookies? Rabbits have always been around here in great abundance, but now we are getting continual reports of black bears visiting peoples yards. We had a young one go shopping last year at Sears in one of the local malls:

Yesterday one was prowling around in a neighborhood about 4 miles from downtown Pittsburgh. With our hills, we have a lot of wooded patches in the various neighborhoods.

    1. We rarely see a bear around here although there is a veritable highway of them travelling in the hills just to the east. They stay on that open wildlife corridor. Mike's sister sees them all the time around her home in Simsbury, CT. The population has infringed on their territory.

  4. We get a lot of rabbits around here, and they vie with the squirrels for food!

  5. As cute as bunnies are, I'd plant extra just for them. I had one but it got tired of Mighty's slow motion chases and left for friendlier grounds.

  6. We have seen a rabbit or two here and there, but they're not nearly the menace to the garden as the deer, the groundhogs and all the other mysterious critters that come calling in the deep of night.

    1. I admit to having resorted to coyote urine to keep deer and groundhogs out of the garden. They sell it at the garden store althought hey don't explain how it is collected and bottled. Nothing, absolutely nothing, scares away the racoons.

  7. No rabbits in our yard, just squirrels, bear, deer, and once in a while a little red fox. In fact that's about all we're missing is rabbits!!

  8. That could very well be one of Lucinda's relatives. If so, your herbs may be in big trouble. Hope you got both your vacuum cleaner and computer back. I could do without the vacuum but not the computer.

  9. Remember my post abut the hummingbird spirit guide? Maybe the bunny has a message for you. I hope it doesn't die.

    1. I do remember that post!
We have a lot of hummingbirds. We have a feeder on the deck and Bee Balm underneath that. They are mean little birds, very territorial. Fun to watch, though.
I will remain open to whatever the bunny wants to tell me.

  10. I sure hope that little bunny minds his manners and does eat your garden!

  11. We have bunnies under the deck of the house next door. They used to live under our deck, but our dog has frightened them away. The scamper across the lawn to torment Boston. He wants to chase them so bad.

  12. We have not seen many rabbits in the seven years we have lived here but for some reason we are spotting many this year. When we lived in Kansas we saw rabbits often. Once Ron was mowing and spotted a newborn rabbit that was obviously separated from its mother. Ron brought it in the house and I got on the internet only to learn it was next to impossible to save such a young rabbit. I made a bottle with small eye dropper and started the routine that actually did save this tiny critter which we returned to the wild when it grew large enough to fend for itself.

Updates

On September 29, I had the closing on my condo. Everything that was not going to the buyers was out and packed in the ABF moving truck which had by the been taken over to the storage units. Don thought it would take him until Wednesday to finish packing the truck with the help of his son. It took him until late Thursday with Chris' help and mine. Kevin was supposed to help load as well but he was in a mountain bike accident and wrecked his shoulder the week before. That added driving him to doctor appointments to my to do list and dong some shopping for him plus jobs around the house that might need two functioning upper limbs.  We stayed with Kevin on Friday night after the closing and then had a suite in an extended stay place for the coming week. This was the worst possible time to have to get a room because the prices balloon during leaf peeping season if you can even find a room at all. But it was close to the storage units where we were working and it was dog friendly. We ju

Wedding

Don and I drove to South Carolina to attend the wedding of my step-grandson, Will. Will Will and Katie The wedding took place on Dataw Island, a beautiful outdoor ceremony followed by a reception in the country club. We stayed in a tiny cottage in the historic center of Beaufort, rented from Vrbo. Since the wedding was at 5 p.m., we had time to explore the area a bit. I really like the low country scenery and historical charm. Sitting quietly in the curtained gazebo I was visited by multiple cardinals. They came to visit the feeder, not me, but I can always pretend! How I will always remember Will!

Rest In Peace

In a summer that has been so wet, Sunday was a reprieve. The humidity dropped and the sun came out. It was a day that could have been special ordered by the family of a friend's husband. It was the day they had arranged his celebration of life ceremony set on the shore of Lake Champlain. I was not looking forward to the gathering, even couched as a celebration. This is a family fraught with relationship tensions. It turned out to be a beautiful day and a beautiful ceremony. A Catholic priest gave a brief but meaningful homily and two Air Force members played "Taps" and presented the American flag to my friend. I am not a Christian, but I do know about Christ Consciousness. That priest's word's filled me with such a sense of peace and love. I hope it did the same for the family members and neighbors who attended.
