Windy Night

I had just gotten into bed the other night when the wind started to blow.  And what a racket.  It ushered in a thunder storm and a down pour.  The lightning was actually scary.

There were some branches and some trees down, but I did not hear of any major damage and we didn’t lose electricity.  Our deck furniture was re-arranged though.  Usually, two of the chairs are at the other end of the deck.  I guess we are lucky that a chair did not hit the glass door.

DSCN2760I would say that the crab apple blossoms are pretty well done.  It looks like pretty pink snow.

The next morning the deck chairs were all against the opposite side of the deck.  We had flood warnings on Thursday and several roads were washed out--7 inches of rain.  Rain was needed--just not all at once.  It has rained all day here (Friday), but not the torrential downpour type. We are inconvenienced by road closings, detours, and dump trucks continuously rumbling past; but there was no tornado.

This video shows the damage done by Thursday night's rain dump, after two days of intermittent rain.  The last shot, the Old Red Mill, is where I took my grand kids hiking last Sunday.

We are heading for Connecticut tomorrow morning, if we can.  The wash outs on the video are to the north of us.  A wet weekend is forecast but we will spend time with family so it doesn't matter so much.  I am glad we did not plan a Memorial Day camping trip as we have so often in the past.

  2. Have a good week-end. Weather seems to be unusual all over the country. We've had rain the last few days with temps in the 40s so its felt like winter has returned. Anything is better that what they've had in Oklahoma.

  5. The weather people called for horrible storms for us as the system that caused the tornado in OK passed through, but we came out getting some much needed rain with a few quick downpours but for the most part well behaved and no wind or hail. So we were lucky. It has been windy since but in the way March is windy. Wow 7 inches of rain! We came through that smelling like a rose. Thank goodness you had no damage to your home.

  6. Oh goodness, glad to hear there was no major damage at your home. I certainly you can make it through to Connecticut. This has been a particularly bad year for weather. Hopefully, the worst is over!

  7. We got two days of intermittent rain -- nothing like yours. Today we have the high winds, BUT brilliant sun! Enjoy your weekend.

  8. We here in NY have also had enough rain to float Noah's Ark, and enough wind to blow us to the fifth of never.

  9. Wow. That was some destructive, raging water. We saw a lot of the aftermath of Irene when we were in your state last May, and there was a big storm while we were there that did more road damage in New Hampshire. We watched an amazing thunder and lightning storm from the Chinese restaurant where we were eating and where we temporarily lost power. I have some idea what this storm must have been like.

  10. Goodness, you have really taken a pounding. I feel for those not as smart as you who did go camping.

  11. I am so glad you are safe. There is sure a lot of ugly weather out there right now. Glad you didn't have any serious damage.

  12. I'm sorry to hear of this extreme weather. I hope you don't have a repeat of the terrible flooding of a few years ago.

  13. Thanks for the concern, everyone. We drove through continuous rain, but made it safely to Connecticut. It was not a jolly trip. We went to see Mike's brother in the hospital. He had a malignant mass removed from his intestine on Thursday. The surgery was a "success" but by Friday night he was in the ICU, totally sedated and on a ventilator. There has been no change as of Monday. He has pneumonia, but we do not know if or how much the cancer may spread. So we pray.

Updates

On September 29, I had the closing on my condo. Everything that was not going to the buyers was out and packed in the ABF moving truck which had by the been taken over to the storage units. Don thought it would take him until Wednesday to finish packing the truck with the help of his son. It took him until late Thursday with Chris' help and mine. Kevin was supposed to help load as well but he was in a mountain bike accident and wrecked his shoulder the week before. That added driving him to doctor appointments to my to do list and dong some shopping for him plus jobs around the house that might need two functioning upper limbs.  We stayed with Kevin on Friday night after the closing and then had a suite in an extended stay place for the coming week. This was the worst possible time to have to get a room because the prices balloon during leaf peeping season if you can even find a room at all. But it was close to the storage units where we were working and it was dog friendly. We ju

Wedding

Don and I drove to South Carolina to attend the wedding of my step-grandson, Will. Will Will and Katie The wedding took place on Dataw Island, a beautiful outdoor ceremony followed by a reception in the country club. We stayed in a tiny cottage in the historic center of Beaufort, rented from Vrbo. Since the wedding was at 5 p.m., we had time to explore the area a bit. I really like the low country scenery and historical charm. Sitting quietly in the curtained gazebo I was visited by multiple cardinals. They came to visit the feeder, not me, but I can always pretend! How I will always remember Will!

Rest In Peace

In a summer that has been so wet, Sunday was a reprieve. The humidity dropped and the sun came out. It was a day that could have been special ordered by the family of a friend's husband. It was the day they had arranged his celebration of life ceremony set on the shore of Lake Champlain. I was not looking forward to the gathering, even couched as a celebration. This is a family fraught with relationship tensions. It turned out to be a beautiful day and a beautiful ceremony. A Catholic priest gave a brief but meaningful homily and two Air Force members played "Taps" and presented the American flag to my friend. I am not a Christian, but I do know about Christ Consciousness. That priest's word's filled me with such a sense of peace and love. I hope it did the same for the family members and neighbors who attended.
