Home

Well we are certainly not in Florida any more.  I had to dig out my winter jacket, knit hat, and gloves this morning.  I was going to do a bit of yard work, but did not get very far.  I have been so tired and feeling blah in trying to recover from the trip home.

Honestly, I think it would be better to take a slower trip and stop to sight-see along the way, but Mike is all about point A to point B.  I think it is because he had so much driving to do when he was working, and in that case time was money.  We are retired now.  We have friends and family we could visit along the way, but he says things like, "That would take us 80 miles out of our way."

The house was pretty much as we had left it--except for all the dead cluster flies.  I had to vacuum before we unloaded the car.  ICK.  Also there was the typical wind damage.  I piece of trim was ripped off the shed and the chimney cap was blown off.  I held the ladder for Mike when he climbed up to put the cap back on, but I hope he never does that again.

I have to get out to the grocery store and start restocking the cupboards.  Again, general ennui has prevented me from taking that on.

We did spend some quality time with the Comcast people.  We have the cable suspended for the winter.  Mike's TV came back on just like it was supposed to, but my cable box would not work.  I switched it out, but then could not get the new one to communicate with the television set.  It is set now, but I will have to re-program my favorites.  I have a list for the grandkids' to use when they visit, a list for movie channels, and a list of the HD channels that I might watch.  There are those hundreds of other channels that I don't even want to flip through.  I do miss the On-Demand feature when we are in FL.  Actually, I wish we had DVR service here.

I also really am glad to have my NECCI sewing machine to use and the gas stove.  There are things I miss abut Vermont.  We have a nice new glass top electric range in FL, but I really do not see the attraction.

I think that the idea of a trip to the quilt shop is perking me up!

  1. Travel exhausts us all, and I think it is harder the older we get. We are not as flexible in both energy and changing habits. I know my last trip which was just a week long took me days to feel normal again.

  2. Glad you are home and back to your Vermont routine. Travel gets harder as we age, even though I love it. Making several stops along the way helps. That is one of the best advantages of retirement - MORE TIME to do the things we enjoy.

  3. Glad you're home again safe and sound. Yours is the second blog I've read today that mentioned sewing machines. I'm getting homesick for the one I left behind in Texas.

  4. Welcome back home. Aren't you glad to be able to enjoy spring? Still, travel is exhausting. Please get some rest first.

  5. So glad you are home safe and sound. My DH also drives from point A to point B (I thought it was a *male thing* but I was told recently that a friend's husband loves to stop along the way??)

We used to have Comcast, then Time-Warner cable, now AT&T Uverse... too many useless channels... and no Hallmark! If we didn't have DVR for BBC shows, I'd ditch them all.

  7. Take time to rest Olga and get back in the chilly VT groove. Don't get me started on Comcast.

  8. There is always so much to tend to after an extended time away from home. Dead flies and food, yes, but pace yourself with the rest.
Welcome home. I hope winter is finally over in Vermont.

  9. I haven't even been away and I'm suffering from "general ennui."

  10. Well, we are still looking for signs of spring. This morning there is a sprinkling of snow on the ground. It will be unusually cold according to the weather man--at least for another week. Good thing we put 800 gallons of fuel in the tank yesterday...although quite a bad thing for the checking account.
I counted a dozen or so Christmas wreaths still on front doors after we hit the VT border...only one bouquet of Eastery looking flowers. Spring is taking its sweet time this year and people are cranky about it. Still there are a few intrepid green shoots poking through in the garden.

  11. It's too bad there are such extreme temperatures on the mainland. Why can't we all strike a happy medium, say 75 degrees? Lol.

  12. Next year when you come back tell Mike that you are going to south Georgia, then South Carolina, then Virginia... Why beat the hell out of yourselves. Same amount gas, you'll just blow some cash on hotels and eating out.

    1. HA! I don't TELL Mike anything. I can sometimes convince him he came up with the idea.

  13. Glad you made it home safe. They could have made it warmer for you. I don't know how I could go back to no DVR and no On Demand and Grampy would just go insane if he couldn't rewind!

Updates

On September 29, I had the closing on my condo. Everything that was not going to the buyers was out and packed in the ABF moving truck which had by the been taken over to the storage units. Don thought it would take him until Wednesday to finish packing the truck with the help of his son. It took him until late Thursday with Chris' help and mine. Kevin was supposed to help load as well but he was in a mountain bike accident and wrecked his shoulder the week before. That added driving him to doctor appointments to my to do list and dong some shopping for him plus jobs around the house that might need two functioning upper limbs.  We stayed with Kevin on Friday night after the closing and then had a suite in an extended stay place for the coming week. This was the worst possible time to have to get a room because the prices balloon during leaf peeping season if you can even find a room at all. But it was close to the storage units where we were working and it was dog friendly. We ju

Wedding

Don and I drove to South Carolina to attend the wedding of my step-grandson, Will. Will Will and Katie The wedding took place on Dataw Island, a beautiful outdoor ceremony followed by a reception in the country club. We stayed in a tiny cottage in the historic center of Beaufort, rented from Vrbo. Since the wedding was at 5 p.m., we had time to explore the area a bit. I really like the low country scenery and historical charm. Sitting quietly in the curtained gazebo I was visited by multiple cardinals. They came to visit the feeder, not me, but I can always pretend! How I will always remember Will!

Rest In Peace

In a summer that has been so wet, Sunday was a reprieve. The humidity dropped and the sun came out. It was a day that could have been special ordered by the family of a friend's husband. It was the day they had arranged his celebration of life ceremony set on the shore of Lake Champlain. I was not looking forward to the gathering, even couched as a celebration. This is a family fraught with relationship tensions. It turned out to be a beautiful day and a beautiful ceremony. A Catholic priest gave a brief but meaningful homily and two Air Force members played "Taps" and presented the American flag to my friend. I am not a Christian, but I do know about Christ Consciousness. That priest's word's filled me with such a sense of peace and love. I hope it did the same for the family members and neighbors who attended.
