Frustration

I am slowly but surely becoming frustrated with the spam that accumulates daily in Comments.

I tried turning on the comment moderation which seemed to have the effect of letting more spam through the so-called filter.  And then there is my tendency to hit the "delete" instead of the "publish" button for legitimate comments.  I hate that!  My apologies to those whose comments did not make it into print.

And why does Blogger tell me it is "saving" when I hit "delete" I wonder?

Of course there is always the dreaded word verification option.  Surely there can be a better way?
The one good thing I can say about it is that it does always prompt me to clean my glasses.  Sometimes that helps.

Connie at Family Home and Life does a link-up where I read this post: Please Turn Off Captcha.
I have decided to tweak my settings a bit.  I turned comment moderation to "sometimes" (for older posts) and I disallowed "anonymous" comments.  We shall see.

Check out the click and drag option shown on the second link above.  It seems so much less noxious.  Why can't blogger do something like that?

  1. Hi Olga! Thanks for posting about this. I brings even more attention to the issue and maybe Blogger will pay attention and change things. I think that disallowing anonymous comments will really help out. I only changed that option on mine recently, but my spam filter STILL caught about 98% of my spam. I am a new follower!

  2. I don't allow anonymous and really don't get much spam. If anyone comments (who I don't know) with a link attached, I delete. Please - no word verification!

    1. I have had no spam since I disallowed anonymous comments. No word verification for me!

  3. Now I'll have to go check my setup, because I don't remember if I allow anonymous or not. I never seem to get spam so I'm guessing not. I don't use word verification because it makes some people nuts - understandably since I've had to repeat several times to get my comment to go through on some blogs.

  4. Sorry to hear you are having issues. There are too many pranksters out there(:

  5. Any spam usually goes to my email, and not on the blog. I think I used the settings you suggested.

  6. We're all wrestling with this one. I took off word verification for about a month at the end of last year, and just got too much spam, so I put it back on. I know it's a pain, but what are ya gonna do? I try to look at the bright side. When I comment on someone else's blog, and I guess right the first time ... I'm so proud of myself and give myself a big pat on the back!

  7. I feel equally frustrated. I have yet to come up with a good solution.

  8. I have suddenly been getting a lot of spam too, with them using Anonymous. I do had to turn that option off, but I may have too.

  9. Disallowing anonymous has really stopped them cold for me. I hated to do it for I had some sweet people who used that form and they are now unable to comment. Good luck.

  10. I use Wordpress so this isn't an issue for me but I sure do hate trying to read the CAPTCHA on some of the Blogger sites so my fingers (and my eyes!) are crossed!

  11. I was getting daily hits on my email notification but it did not make it on to the blog. For some reason that changed and in the middle of the night my blog was being hit with these charming notes, telling me what insightful posts I have with a link to a porn site.

I engaged the captcha and that took care of it. Reading how much people hate them here, I am thinking about pulling it down and just living with the deletions. I still don't like the idea of having those links even if only for a few hours. I don't want to block anonymous comments, because sometimes there are great comments.

Updates

On September 29, I had the closing on my condo. Everything that was not going to the buyers was out and packed in the ABF moving truck which had by the been taken over to the storage units. Don thought it would take him until Wednesday to finish packing the truck with the help of his son. It took him until late Thursday with Chris' help and mine. Kevin was supposed to help load as well but he was in a mountain bike accident and wrecked his shoulder the week before. That added driving him to doctor appointments to my to do list and dong some shopping for him plus jobs around the house that might need two functioning upper limbs.  We stayed with Kevin on Friday night after the closing and then had a suite in an extended stay place for the coming week. This was the worst possible time to have to get a room because the prices balloon during leaf peeping season if you can even find a room at all. But it was close to the storage units where we were working and it was dog friendly. We ju

Wedding

Don and I drove to South Carolina to attend the wedding of my step-grandson, Will. Will Will and Katie The wedding took place on Dataw Island, a beautiful outdoor ceremony followed by a reception in the country club. We stayed in a tiny cottage in the historic center of Beaufort, rented from Vrbo. Since the wedding was at 5 p.m., we had time to explore the area a bit. I really like the low country scenery and historical charm. Sitting quietly in the curtained gazebo I was visited by multiple cardinals. They came to visit the feeder, not me, but I can always pretend! How I will always remember Will!

Rest In Peace

In a summer that has been so wet, Sunday was a reprieve. The humidity dropped and the sun came out. It was a day that could have been special ordered by the family of a friend's husband. It was the day they had arranged his celebration of life ceremony set on the shore of Lake Champlain. I was not looking forward to the gathering, even couched as a celebration. This is a family fraught with relationship tensions. It turned out to be a beautiful day and a beautiful ceremony. A Catholic priest gave a brief but meaningful homily and two Air Force members played "Taps" and presented the American flag to my friend. I am not a Christian, but I do know about Christ Consciousness. That priest's word's filled me with such a sense of peace and love. I hope it did the same for the family members and neighbors who attended.
