Good-bye, 2012; Hello, 2013

So, it is almost over.  We managed to avoid the end of the world on December 21st although, I  guess the fiscal cliff still looms.  Oh, but now they are calling it more like a fiscal slope so that’s all right then.

There will not be a phenomenon such as 12-12-12 in the rest of my lifetime.  Oh, well, I took very little note of those dates anyway.  I am sure it would be handy to have your wedding date, or your birth date, or even your twelfth anniversary on that day.  Imagine the righteous indignation you could muster: What?!?  You forgot our anniversary?!?  Unlucky for me, though, because I am the one who always forgets those sentimental dates.

According to a numerology article I read in an area magazine—the Sarasota area is tres new agey—the coming year will be a financially beneficial year for me (hence my refusal to worry about the financial cliff).  I hope so, as 2012 was not a banner year on the money front.  Still, we never once went without a meal unless we wanted to—usually because we had too much at the last one.  Also, we were able to complete the furnishing of our Florida home.  I have nothing to complain about and every reason to be grateful.  And I am.

I have made a couple of resolutions, but mostly I am concentrating on my hopes for a better world ushered in with the new year:
  • a world where people (including those On the Hill) work together with civility,
  • a world where children go to bed at night feeling safe and well-fed,
  • a world where women do not lie near death after being brutally raped and beaten,
  • a world where weapons are turned into ploughshares and we study war no more (something like that),
  • a world where peace is found in every home in every land.
Not so much to ask…

  1. I double agree with this wish and maybe if we all put our minds and prayers to it, it might just happen.

  2. I'm counting down the New Year here in Breckenridge Olga. If even just one of your wishes would come true I'd be grateful. My life is full too - I'm thankful. Happy 2013!

  3. What a powerful list and I so agree. Lets make it so by badgering our elected officials to do the right thing.

  5. I have alway been something of a New Years scrooge, at one time wanting to boil every fool celebrating New Years in their own oil and bury them with a stem of a martini glass through their heart, but the ghosts of too many years pasts have come to haunt me. So I have come to a grudging respect for the sentiment of New Years, and indeed hope that some of your wishes for 2013 will come true.

As far as the fiscal cliff goes, by the time the politicians get done polishing it, it will be a wonderful thing.

Happy New Year Olga, I hope 2013 is a very good year for you.

  7. I'm with you on that list, and I will add that I'm going to try to be nicer to and about people in the coming year. I'll try to improve my tiny piece of the globe in hopes the ripple effect will take it from there.

Updates

On September 29, I had the closing on my condo. Everything that was not going to the buyers was out and packed in the ABF moving truck which had by the been taken over to the storage units. Don thought it would take him until Wednesday to finish packing the truck with the help of his son. It took him until late Thursday with Chris' help and mine. Kevin was supposed to help load as well but he was in a mountain bike accident and wrecked his shoulder the week before. That added driving him to doctor appointments to my to do list and dong some shopping for him plus jobs around the house that might need two functioning upper limbs.  We stayed with Kevin on Friday night after the closing and then had a suite in an extended stay place for the coming week. This was the worst possible time to have to get a room because the prices balloon during leaf peeping season if you can even find a room at all. But it was close to the storage units where we were working and it was dog friendly. We ju

Wedding

Don and I drove to South Carolina to attend the wedding of my step-grandson, Will. Will Will and Katie The wedding took place on Dataw Island, a beautiful outdoor ceremony followed by a reception in the country club. We stayed in a tiny cottage in the historic center of Beaufort, rented from Vrbo. Since the wedding was at 5 p.m., we had time to explore the area a bit. I really like the low country scenery and historical charm. Sitting quietly in the curtained gazebo I was visited by multiple cardinals. They came to visit the feeder, not me, but I can always pretend! How I will always remember Will!

Rest In Peace

In a summer that has been so wet, Sunday was a reprieve. The humidity dropped and the sun came out. It was a day that could have been special ordered by the family of a friend's husband. It was the day they had arranged his celebration of life ceremony set on the shore of Lake Champlain. I was not looking forward to the gathering, even couched as a celebration. This is a family fraught with relationship tensions. It turned out to be a beautiful day and a beautiful ceremony. A Catholic priest gave a brief but meaningful homily and two Air Force members played "Taps" and presented the American flag to my friend. I am not a Christian, but I do know about Christ Consciousness. That priest's word's filled me with such a sense of peace and love. I hope it did the same for the family members and neighbors who attended.
