Home Again, Home Again

Our trip went without incident and we are once again back in Vermont...where the rain has been steadily drizzling down and temperatures are hovering in the high 40's.  Our car was actually clean until we crossed the VT border on route 4.  It seemed like on cue that it started raining and the trucks passing by started splashing the mud.

The house was pretty much as we had left it. (We have a new thermostat.)  The daffodils are starting to pole up and some have even bloomed.  I can see buds on the lilacs and the crab apple tree.  The grass is actually green.  We went through some gorgeous spring weather, in reverse from late to early, as we travelled north.

I am getting quite bored with the long car trip between here and there.  We made it two extra times in the past year and maybe that accounts for my boredom.  Reading the bill boards felt like leafing through a magazine--ad after ad after ad.  I kept nodding off.

A billboard for the open heart surgery program at a certain hospital, repeated mile upon mile, struck me as quite odd.  I mean, seriously, if I needed open heart surgery I would think I'd want more professional advise than the ad on a billboard.  Seeing that ad did not prompt me to pull into the hospital and request their ballyhooed surgery either.  I'm just asking, "What's the point?  Aren't medical costs high enough without having to pay exorbitant advertising fees?"

I was taken with the sign for Rag Apple Lassie Vineyards though.  That's a good name.

I am planning to spend a few minutes checking out what I missed on television and then snuggling into a pile of pillows and blankets for an extra long sleep.  The ride, the unpacking, and the grocery shopping to restock have all combined to do me in.

  2. I have taken that trip many times and I am always taken aback by the vasectomy billboard and that odd looking doctor. I also often wonder how the South of the Border folks can afford all those expensive billboards, add all those new buildings and features and never have customers...strange indeed methinks. Perhaps something very different goes on there.

  3. Never thought about the South of the Border in quite that way - maybe it's really a front for the border patrol or drug pins...It is good to go away and it is always good to come home again. Once the work of getting settled is over hope you can enjoy!

  5. We are planning a trip beginning Memorial Day that will take us to Boston and ten right away into Vermont for four days. The travel books have warned me that spring is the "muddy season". Here in the PNW we understand that. I am hoping there will be less mud by Memorial Day?
I'm glad to hear you made it safely home and have the necessary tasks done so that you can settle in.

  6. I bet you are tired. I'm not sure I could have done all you have done after the road trip. Welcome back to Vermont.

  7. Hope you had a nice long and wonderful nap!

  8. Catch up on shut-eye - a snooze while it's raining sounds super! I hope if I need heart surgery, I can find a better referral than a billboard!

Updates

On September 29, I had the closing on my condo. Everything that was not going to the buyers was out and packed in the ABF moving truck which had by the been taken over to the storage units. Don thought it would take him until Wednesday to finish packing the truck with the help of his son. It took him until late Thursday with Chris' help and mine. Kevin was supposed to help load as well but he was in a mountain bike accident and wrecked his shoulder the week before. That added driving him to doctor appointments to my to do list and dong some shopping for him plus jobs around the house that might need two functioning upper limbs.  We stayed with Kevin on Friday night after the closing and then had a suite in an extended stay place for the coming week. This was the worst possible time to have to get a room because the prices balloon during leaf peeping season if you can even find a room at all. But it was close to the storage units where we were working and it was dog friendly. We ju

Wedding

Don and I drove to South Carolina to attend the wedding of my step-grandson, Will. Will Will and Katie The wedding took place on Dataw Island, a beautiful outdoor ceremony followed by a reception in the country club. We stayed in a tiny cottage in the historic center of Beaufort, rented from Vrbo. Since the wedding was at 5 p.m., we had time to explore the area a bit. I really like the low country scenery and historical charm. Sitting quietly in the curtained gazebo I was visited by multiple cardinals. They came to visit the feeder, not me, but I can always pretend! How I will always remember Will!

Rest In Peace

In a summer that has been so wet, Sunday was a reprieve. The humidity dropped and the sun came out. It was a day that could have been special ordered by the family of a friend's husband. It was the day they had arranged his celebration of life ceremony set on the shore of Lake Champlain. I was not looking forward to the gathering, even couched as a celebration. This is a family fraught with relationship tensions. It turned out to be a beautiful day and a beautiful ceremony. A Catholic priest gave a brief but meaningful homily and two Air Force members played "Taps" and presented the American flag to my friend. I am not a Christian, but I do know about Christ Consciousness. That priest's word's filled me with such a sense of peace and love. I hope it did the same for the family members and neighbors who attended.
