Dreams

"Surely the day will come when color means nothing more than the skin tone, when religion is seen uniquely as a way to speak one's soul; when birth places have the weight of a throw of the dice and all men are born free, when understanding breeds love and brotherhood."          Josephine Baker

This quote in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.  He was not alone in having a dream.

Now, on a far less serious note...I have had recurring dreams, nightmares, in which I am on a college campus.  The settings vary, but always I am frantic because I cannot find my way to a math class.  The room has moved, it's impossibly far from the last class, even requires my taking a boat to get there.

I keep wondering what this means.  Something is not adding up in my life?  I feel a sense of failure over something?  Math teachers are generally mean and petty people?  I don't really know. (Really, though, I know many very nice math teachers!)

BUT, last night there was a break through of sorts.  I dreamed I was actually in a math class.  I finally made it!  No relief though.  I was hopelessly befuddled by the problems the professor was posing.  I could start a computation, but then get so confused I could not go on.  The pace the professor was setting was way too fast for me.   A teaching assistant came in to offer help, but he took one look at my scribbles and just scoffed, then went on to someone else.

Okay, that's not much of a breakthrough.

I don't know if this is true for other places, but some VT colleges offer free classes to those over 65.  I'm looking forward to that, but I definitely will NOT be taking any math courses...free or otherwise.

  1. Olga, I don't have to have a nightmare like that, all I have to do is remember how it was back in math class. How I could always get straight A's in English and History and C's and D's in math has always befuddled me. I finally figured out that the part of the brain that deals with numerics got forgotten when I was in the womb. That explanation satisfied me. Because the only other explanation was that I was dumb. And surely that couldn't be true.

  3. I used to have that nightmare about not finding my class all of the time but it has been gone now for a long time. I guess I finally got old enough that it was no longer a possibility. :-)

  4. I have a recurring dream that I'm in college and it's time for finals and I haven't studied - I haven't even been going to class. I interpret that as a sign that I regret not finishing, because I dropped out to get married. The dream is right. Stupid, stupid, stupid move.

  5. That's funny!...

I have dreams...LOTS of them. But, at my age, I usually don't have the energy to bring them to fruition. Except maybe...if it's a quilt or two =P

  6. Years ago I used to have these mad college dreams of not finding the classroom and then finding it and finding I am not prepared for the test. I do not know what these dreams mean, but they are very common.

  7. I usually have my old VW bug stolen and have to walk miles because of that but only after a long and fruitless search for it.
I think it is because there is something in our lives that is just out of reach or that we can't control.

  8. If it's any comfort, I've been enduring nightmare after nightmare for a week or so. Always things beyond my control . . . life changes that everybody else knows are coming and nobody tells me . . . I wake up tied in knots!

  9. What a frightening dream and one I haven't had in a while (knock on wood!).

  10. Olga, strange that so many of us dream of not being able to find the classroom... I swear at least once a month I am back on a college campus looking for the room that has moved. I'm sure it is a symbolic replay of choosing marriage instead of completing my education. Stupid, Stupid!

  11. I, too, have had far too many nightmares about feeling lost and confused in a school setting. Usually it's that I can't remember my locker combination and I'm late for an important test but NEED what's in my locker. I wonder why we dream such things.

I would love to take some continued education classes, at a college or otherwise. Like you, math would definitely not be one of my choices!

  12. It has been a while, but I used to dream I was in college and I had mere minutes to get to the final for a course I never realized I was talking.

  13. Luckily I do not have nightmares. I have some odd, weird dreams but none that give me any anxiety. I have never felt fear of not finding the classroom. I spent much os my life in them.

Updates

On September 29, I had the closing on my condo. Everything that was not going to the buyers was out and packed in the ABF moving truck which had by the been taken over to the storage units. Don thought it would take him until Wednesday to finish packing the truck with the help of his son. It took him until late Thursday with Chris' help and mine. Kevin was supposed to help load as well but he was in a mountain bike accident and wrecked his shoulder the week before. That added driving him to doctor appointments to my to do list and dong some shopping for him plus jobs around the house that might need two functioning upper limbs.  We stayed with Kevin on Friday night after the closing and then had a suite in an extended stay place for the coming week. This was the worst possible time to have to get a room because the prices balloon during leaf peeping season if you can even find a room at all. But it was close to the storage units where we were working and it was dog friendly. We ju

Wedding

Don and I drove to South Carolina to attend the wedding of my step-grandson, Will. Will Will and Katie The wedding took place on Dataw Island, a beautiful outdoor ceremony followed by a reception in the country club. We stayed in a tiny cottage in the historic center of Beaufort, rented from Vrbo. Since the wedding was at 5 p.m., we had time to explore the area a bit. I really like the low country scenery and historical charm. Sitting quietly in the curtained gazebo I was visited by multiple cardinals. They came to visit the feeder, not me, but I can always pretend! How I will always remember Will!

Rest In Peace

In a summer that has been so wet, Sunday was a reprieve. The humidity dropped and the sun came out. It was a day that could have been special ordered by the family of a friend's husband. It was the day they had arranged his celebration of life ceremony set on the shore of Lake Champlain. I was not looking forward to the gathering, even couched as a celebration. This is a family fraught with relationship tensions. It turned out to be a beautiful day and a beautiful ceremony. A Catholic priest gave a brief but meaningful homily and two Air Force members played "Taps" and presented the American flag to my friend. I am not a Christian, but I do know about Christ Consciousness. That priest's word's filled me with such a sense of peace and love. I hope it did the same for the family members and neighbors who attended.
